Structural Mechanics and Coupled Systems Laboratory

The Structural Mechanics and Coupled Systems Laboratory (LMSSC) is a research group of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (Cnam). The team is composed of 3 professors, 1 emeritus professor, 7 assistant professors, 2 engineers, 1 technician, 12 PhD students. The laboratory has been created in 1997 and has been recognized since its beginning by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. A scientific audit recently carried out by the AERES (French Agency for Evaluation of Research and Higher education), awarded the Lab an “A” rating. The “A” rating was awarded for each of the four following criteria: Scientific quality and production; Diffusion and attractivity, integration into the environment; Management and involvement of laboratory members; Quality of projects.
The three main research topics of the LMSSC, treated from a numerical and experimental point of view, are:
  • Structural dynamics in linear and nonlinear: mathematical and numerical models for damping; shocks responses; nonlinear vibrations; vibration experiments.
  • Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI): modeling of sloshing problems; effects of surface tension; gravity and compressibility interactions; dissipative interfaces in structural-acoustics, extended finite element method in FSI.
  • Smart structures and intelligent adaptive interfaces: mechanical and numerical modeling for noise and vibration reduction from hybrid passive/active treatments (viscoelastic, poroelastic, piezoelectric...).
Concerning the three domains described above, which are of great interest in various fields of high-tech industries (aeronautics, space, automotive, etc.), the LMSSC has a well-established national and international scientific reputation as it can be seen from:
  • The number of papers published in International Peer Reviewed Journals (over 70 since 2005 for a team composed of less than 10 faculty members); the number of international scientific awards; the number of invited lectures (plenary, semi-plenary and keynote).
  • The various collaborations and industrial contracts (ONERA, CNES, EADS, SNECMA, DCNS, THALES ALENIA SPACE ...); the participation in European and international research projects (INMAR IP, Marie Curie RTN SMART, PROCOPE PHC, PHC PPROCOR, CAPES-COFECUB ...); the collaborative projects with national public funding (ADEME, PPF, DGA, ANR ...).
  • The active participation of some members of the LMMSC to the organization of international congresses and minisymposia around the research topics of the Lab (ICAST, SPIE, ASME/SMASIS, AIAA, WCCM, USNCCM, ECCM, XFEM ...).
